Emily Stone Copper Ant Leafcutter Sculpture

leafcutter ant sculpture

My leafcutter ant is a metre and a half long, and his precisely articulated body holds the weight of the leaf in his powerful mandibles just as real ants do. The leaf has had the natural verdigris colouring of old copper accelerated, but the whole thing is lacquered so that it will retain this colouring. Although the legs look delicate, he is quite robust, and can be picked up carefully by the front legs in order to be moved.
